3D/4D and SRID aware Conversion functions for SDO_Geometry: WKT and EWKT

Oracle’s Wkt functions are Ogc 1.1 compliant. They do not support 3D+ geometries. This article shows how my Jts package, based on the Java Topology Suite and Jaspa plug the gap in the existing Oracle technology.

Oracle Spatial does not read or write 3D Well-known text (WKT); nor does it read/write measures. Oracle’s SDO_Geometry implementation only supports the OGC Simple Features 1.1 specification which is 2D only.

What I have done is expose the Jaspa/JTS implementation of methods more 3D+ aware to PL/SQL and therefore SQL via my Spatial Companion for Oracle (SC4).

The specific methods/functions are:

  • ST_GeomFromEWKT
  • ST_AsText

I took the last EWKT and pumped it into SC4O.ST_GeomFromEWKT as follows. It worked.

The posting process changed the string literals and formatting so sorry about that. The SC40 function doesn’t work for me when passed a parameter (clob): This doesn’t work:

Unfortunately when I move to the varchar2 version the procedure throws an exception whenever my plsql varchar2 exceeds 4000 in length. (some of the WKTS are 10000+ in length). There must be some internal converion going on.

ORA-01460: unimplemented or unreasonable conversion requested

I’ll wait until you have a chance to investigate.

Any update on this? Just checking in – no pressure!

I have no Java experience and your library appears to be the only means on earth to convert 3D WKT to SDO_GEOMETRY !

I could probably write something from scratch in PL/SQL if you are too busy at this time though.

I have not worked on the code since my book was released.

I have had to set up the whole source code, development framework again.

I have the SC4O code compiled, I am now testing.

Should have a solution by next week.

If you have a simple geometry objects in the EWKT (eg LINESTRING) then you could build an sdo_geometry object using my Tokenizer function.
