Some Oriented Point Functions

Keywordsoriented point angle construct

Two functions are presented: one to create an oriented point from a normal point and an angle; the other to examine an existing oriented point to return its angle of orientation.

A reader asked me for some help constructing and querying oriented points a few months back. The functions I created for him were one to create an oriented point from an normal point and a supplied whole circle bearing (0-360 degrees); the other was one that, given an oriented point, computed what they orientation angle was.

Here are those functions.

Thanks for the usefull function Simon!
Tested them (ORACLE with SDO_GEOM.VALIDATE_GEOMETRY_WITH_CONTEXT for 2001 and 4001.
The 3001 points brought ORA – 13032 Point:1 – probably because of missing v_dz (?)
At least after adding v_dz=0 in this CASE the error disappeared. Can’t check in 12c yet.

I wrote these for 12c.

I hadn’t considered v_dz because the angles I am computing are planar (2D).

Thanks for pointing out the problem.

I have modified the point2oriented function fixing the issue for 3D and 4D points. I have also added a parameter to round the delta x and y values.

I hope the modified function meets with your satisfaction.
